Should I do Oil Pulling?

Learn the facts and make a smart CHOICE for your health

should I try oil pulling choices in dentistry chicago IL

“Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic therapy that likely has some great benefits. We embrace this practice for those that want to give it a try.  Like many natural remedies, the traditional dental community is slow to have definitive studies to prove it is working, but we like this old remedy to rebalance your biofilm — if you are up for the task.”

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

Oil pulling can help reduce inflammation in the mouth and improve gum health. It can also aid in the removal of cavity and disease-causing bacteria from the mouth. This is because oil acts like an emollient (similar to soap), loosening the grip bacteria have on your teeth and gums.

Some clinical trials and research show that coconut oil may reduce the risk of gum disease and reduce plaque buildup, too.

How do I oil pull at home?

There are countless recipes, and because everyone has a different biofilm everyone’s recipe is different. Guidelines are:

  1. Use edible oils, like coconut, sesame, flax, avocado, or sunflower
  2. Brush and floss first
  3. A tablespoon is plenty
  4. Add flavors if it makes you feel more refreshed
  5. Do it as long as you can, traditional remedies call for 15-20 mins, but 3-4 mins is better than 0 minutes!
  6. We can monitor improvements by looking at less bleeding, fewer cavities, improved pocket depths
  7. We can quantitatively measure your bacterial profile before and after oil pulling using salivary diagnostics. Ask for more details at your next visit!
  8. Spit in the trash, you do not want the oil to build up in your drain.
  9. It will feel refreshing to finish with some clean water afterward.

Can’t I just use regular mouthwash instead?

Traditional mouthwashes like Listerine or even extra-strength prescription mouthwashes may offer some of the same benefits as oil pulling. However, mouthwash may also contribute to a cycle of dry mouth due to their alcohol content. The more you use mouthwash, the drier your mouth will be so you’ll keep using more and more mouthwash. This is a vicious cycle that can be avoided by not using mouthwash — or by oil pulling instead.

Where did oil pulling start?

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice that got its start in India over 2000 years ago. Ayurvedic medicine is focused on the balance between diet, exercise, mindfulness, and other practices to create a well-rounded life and whole-body health.

Is oil pulling safe for kids?

Because the oil should not be swallowed, the practice usually isn’t recommended for young kids. If your child is old enough to brush on their own with toothpaste without swallowing it, you might want to ask your dentist if it’s OK for them to do oil pulling with your supervision.

Can oil pulling damage my crowns, implants, fillings, or dentures?

On the contrary. Neutral oils used in oil pulling are completely safe and as studies show may actually reduce decay and disease. Your crowns, implants, fillings, and dentures won’t be damaged by oil pulling.
